A hotel in Els Gallecs Natural Park will give you the freedom to explore this highly unique green space. The park covers more than 700 hectares and, thanks to the efforts made by institutions and neighbours alike, it has been able to preserve its core values amidst the pressures of urbanisation, despite being located only a few kilometres from Barcelona and very near large residential areas such as Sabadell or Granollers.
Agriculture is one of its core values, and over the past few years, it has specialised in organic production in order to ensure its sustainability and respect for indigenous flora and fauna, which can still be seen today. 75% of its area is devoted to organic agriculture while the rest is terrain that has been left untouched by humans, which is inhabited by large colonies of reptiles and amphibians, among other species. This is why the classic image of Els Gallecs Natural Park is that of a plain with gentle slopes, which changes in colour according to the season of the year, criss-crossed by forest tracks in good condition which are perfect for hikes or going by bike.
In terms of its cultural heritage, the most outstanding monument inside Els Gallecs Natural Park is the Shrine of Santa Maria dels Gallecs, built in the Romanesque style (12th century) and restored in the mid-20th century.
What you can do inside this park?
Thanks to the involvement of institutions, citizens and local corporations in the agricultural sector, this park is very focused on educational activities. In this natural area, it is possible to learn many things about organic agriculture in harmony with the environment, which touches on many aspects such as renewable energy, waste treatment, efficient use of water and respect for the local flora and fauna.
And it goes without saying that the area is just waiting to be explored, preferably on foot or by bike. The park’s main routes are: El camí dels Bandolers (Path of the Bandits), El camí de Sant Valerià and Al bell mig dels Gallecs (In the Midst of Els Gallecs). The longest cycling route, which includes sections of the three above-mentioned trails, has a total length of about 15 km and is perfect to do with children, as slopes are quite moderate, within a safe environment with no vehicle traffic. The most experienced cyclists can even cover the 8 km separating our hotel from Els Gallecs Natural Park, passing through Montmeló and Parets del Vallès, with shortcuts and sections with bicycle lanes.
And the good condition of the paths, as mentioned above, is also the reason why Segway tours are also often available, which are comfortable and respectful towards this park, as they do not generate any noise or greenhouse gases.
To learn more details about routes and itineraries suggested by the Consorci de Gallecs, you can visit the park’s official website. The Consorci will also provide you with a Visitor’s Guide, with suggestions for your visit, useful telephone numbers and maps of the park.
